But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. – 1 Timothy 6:11
In preparation for sermons, I often craft personal definitions. I do this in an effort to exposit the word of God and make things “rememberable” for the people of my congregation. Here are some newly crafted definitions (plus an oldie) pulled from a Bible study over 1 Timothy 6:11.
Righteousness: The completed and sufficient work of Jesus applied to the person of faith, resulting in a proper relationship with God.
Faith: Standing on the promises of God and trusting in the character of God. (An oldie but goodie definition)
Godliness: Inner and outer character that reflects the character of God.
Love: An inward disposition expressed through outward action that seeks the well-being of others and reflects the character of Jesus.
Endurance: The ability to remain faithful through prolonged hardship.
Gentleness: Strength under control and aimed toward kindness.
