*I heard the core of this story told by Herschel York as a firsthand experience on the Pastor Well Podcast (Episode 100). I’ve reworked it and written it as a pastoral parable.
A man once traveled to Romania to visit a friend. After a long conversation over lunch, he and his Romanian friend walked home.
Along the way they heard commotion behind them. A flock of frightened sheep raced down the cobblestone street. Behind the flock, a man shouted, waving his staff and urging the sheep forward.
The visitor turned to his friend. “Do you know that shepherd? He seems to be having a hard time with his sheep.”
The friend chuckled. “He’s no shepherd.”
The visitor looked puzzled. “He’s not?”
“No. A shepherd leads his sheep from the front.”
Then he smiled. “That man is the local butcher.”
