I recently exhorted my congregation to “hold tight” and “stand firm” as I was preaching a concluding sermon on a series through 1 Corinthians 15. I ended the sermon with a quick response to “How?” Here are three quick suggestions.
Read your Bible. No, really read it. Get it inside your mind and your heart. Get it deep inside your bones.
I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you. – Psalm 119:10–11
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. – 1 Peter 2:2-3
Live your Bible. Conform your life to the will of God.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. – James 1:22
Live in Christian community. Surround yourself with mature Christians. Allow mature Christians to pour into you. Pour into others.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. – Colossians 3:15-16
Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. – 1 Corinthians 11:1
This has been a great series. I can certainly attest to surrounding ones self with Christian Community.
Harold and I were very mobile in his work…and each time as we moved and found our church home,
we found wonderful Christian friends that added to our lives and our faith. Many of them were older than
we were at the time and blessed us so with their Christian walk. knowledge, and examples.
