Here is something important that I’ve shared before and I’ll share once again:
But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ – Philippians 3:20
We have a citizenship in Heaven and we eagerly await a Savior from Heaven. I’m not expecting a Savior from Capitol Hill, Wall Street, or anywhere else. My hope is not found in a political party, a political candidate, or political reform. Nope. My hope is found in Jesus Christ. As the old hymn goes, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.”
Yet, I understand the fascination with elections and presidential promises. I once had political aspirations and a very short political career. During my junior year of college I was an intern for my local congressman. I worked in his district office, mostly handling paperwork and phone calls that others passed on to me. It was grunt work but I loved it. It seemed exciting. It seemed important. At the end of a four month internship … it seemed empty. A great deal of good was done but so much more was unfinished. So many promises unfulfilled. Turns out that congressmen are poor saviors. Congressional interns are even worse.
The local church is not perfect but the local church fixes her eyes on a Savior worthy of trust. In fact, Jesus Christ is worthy of our trust, our devotion, and our entire lives.
Followers of Jesus Christ, please pay attention to the political debate but do not put your trust in it. Pledge your allegiance to Jesus Christ – not a party or a candidate.
