There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. – John 1:6-8
John was a bit of an odd character. We’re told his sense of fashion included clothes of camel hair and his taste in cuisine included locust and wild honey. His vocabulary seemed to revolve around the phrase “Repent!” With all peculiarities aside, John had one job and he did it well. He pointed people to Jesus.
Upon further reflection, perhaps John isn’t so foreign as he appears at first glance.
I’m a bit of an odd character myself. I have peculiar fascination with ironing, books, and Diet Coke. I’m sure your life is filled with oddities as well. As followers of Jesus, we too have one job. We have been called to point people to Jesus. We can’t force people to believe, nor should we desire to do so. Yet, we can be witnesses to the light.
We have a job to do. Will we do it well? Allow me to get a bit more personal. Will you do it well?
