Your Excuses Are Not Welcomed Here

As a pastor I speak about putting spiritual gifts to use.  In these discussions I often encounter excuses.  Yet, I hear the same excuses time and time again.  Here’s a rundown of the excuses … along with my counter points

Top 3 Excuses

  1. I’m inadequate
  2. The task is too big
  3. The time is not right

Ever heard these before? Ever used these before?

I’m inadequate.

You will not get an argument from me on this one. You are inadequate. But you serve a God who is more than adequate.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

The task is too big

Again. No argument. The task is too big for you. But not for God.

The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. – 1 Thessalonians 5:24

 The time is not right

I disagree with this one. Think of the notion of putting God on hold. Have you ever been put on hold? It’s a bit aggravating: “I’m a valuable customer. My time is precious.” Now imagine God being put on hold: “Can I put you on hold God? The time is just not right.” I can’t fathom it.

Especially in light of verses such as this …

Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.  – James 4:14
