The Need For Rest

Sometimes lessons are hard to miss.  Or perhaps sometimes they catch your  attention with a 103 degree temperature.

I spent last week doing nothing but canceling meetings and sleeping.  I woke up Monday with a 103 degree temperature and it did not let go until late Wednesday night.  It was a time of forced rest.

Its been a crazy start to the Fall.  I won’t go into the details of my hectic schedule as of late – but I have often remarked, “Something needs to change.  I need some rest.”  My wife usually nodded in agreement, very politely withholding the remark, “I’ve been telling you that for months.”

Well, a terrible sickness is one way of forcing you into rest.

Now that I’m back in the land of the living I’ve been reflecting on Jesus’ habit of seeking silence and solitude.  Here’s a brief taste:

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. – Mark 1:35

But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. – Luke 5:16

After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone. – Matthew 14:23

Sometimes lessons are hard to miss. Or perhaps sometimes they catch your attention with a 103 degree temperature.
