A Day In The Life

FBC logo no whiteI’m incredibly thankful for the work I get to do everyday.  I give thanks to God for calling me to Crawford and allowing me to serve this congregation.  I’m reminded often of the countless blessings.

As 1 Thessalonians 2:8 puts it, “We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.”  I strive for this to be a summary of my ministry.

Here’s an oversimplified look at my week thus far.  There is no better gig.

Monday

6:45AM-7:30AM Monday Morning Prayer

I meet each Monday morning with a small group to pray for our church and community.  We gather in our sanctuary and intercede for others.  All though the transition from Sunday to Monday morning is difficult on some weeks – I would not trade this time for extra rest or anything else.  I love starting my week with this faithful group.  We’ve spent a year praying for revival. I can’t wait to see it happen.

8:30AM-10:00AM One On One Discipleship

After prayer group each Monday morning I sprint home (literally across the street) to grab a quick breakfast and return to my office for a time of one on one discipleship with a church member/friend.  We update each other on our week, read Scripture, and pray.  We are on our third week of adding Scripture memorization to the mix.

10:00AM-11:30AM High School Senior Luncheon Preparations

Each year our church hosts the entire senior class for a luncheon.  My wife and daughter arrived at 10AM with the balloons.  Parents arrived at 10:30AM to finalize decorations, chopped onions, tomatoes, and lettuce, make tea and lemonade, and more.

11:45AM-12:45PM High School Senior Luncheon

This year’s program:

  • Gideon’s presented the students with New Testaments.
  • My wife presented the students with a few gifts on behalf of Texas Baptist Student Ministries, explained TX BSM, and had students fill out information cards to connect them with the BSM on the college campus they will be attending in the fall.
  • I read Psalm 23 and then used it as guide to pray for the students
  • Lunch: Hamburgers (catered by a church member), baked beans, chips. Topped off with ice cream floats.
  • Balloon launch

… followed by clean up.

2:00PM-3:20PM Meeting with Children’s Director

I met with our Children’s Director to discuss plans for our summer Wednesday nights and ways to improve our Wednesday night activities for next year.  I’m so thankful for passionate and gifted volunteers.

3:30PM-5:00PM Wednesday Night Preparation

We are in the midst of a loooong walk through the book of Acts in our Wednesday Night Men’s Bible Study.  I prepped for our discussion on the final few verses of Acts 22 and Acts 23.

Tuesday

8:30AM-9:30AM Personal Prayer and Bible Reading

This time is vital.

9:30AM-10:30AM Sunday Sermon Preparation

Sunday is the final sermon in a 6-week sermon series on the book of Galatians.  This week we tackle the subject of life in the Spirit focused on Galatians 5:16-25.

10:40AM-11:20AM Meals on Wheel Delivery

Each Tuesday I deliver for our local Meals on Wheels.  I head to the senior center to visit with the folks playing 42 and putting together puzzles, and pick up today’s meal.  I get the pleasure of visiting 6 homes (at the moment) and provide a smile, a brief conversation, and a hot meal.

12:00PM – 1:20PM Lunch with Pastor Friend

Tuesday lunches are reserved for a lunch with two pastor friends.  We meet at the First Baptist church in the city 7 miles down the road.  We bring our lunch, discuss the latest happenings, and read through the lectionary text for the week.  This week one friend could not make it.  Thus, we changed it up a bit and met up at a restaurant.  I enjoyed a delicious – slightly overpriced – burger.  Plus, great conversation.

1:30-3:00PM Miscellaneous Administration

I walked my administrative assistant through a few items, reviewed the monthly financial report, returned a few calls and emails.

3:00PM-4:00PM Meeting with Sunday School Director

I had an impromptu meeting with our Sunday School Director.  The conversation mostly involved the recent growth in our nursery and preschool Sunday School classes.  We came up with a few ideas about how to handled growth.  What a great problem!

4:00PM-5:00PM Meeting with Deacon and Mission Trip Participant

I have a deacon joining me and 4 others on a mission trip to Romania this summer.  He stopped by to discuss a few things and take care of loose ends.
