Bible Rant

You have stumbled upon an unrehearsed, unedited Bible rant.  Proceed with caution and at your own risk.

bible-276067_1280I’m a follower of Jesus Christ.  I’m also a pastor.

I read the Bible for spiritual formation.  I also read it for a paycheck.

Sometimes I read it and it feeds my soul.  Other times I read it and it seems like a foreign language that I don’t even recognize.

Sometimes I read it and I’m filled with hope, comfort, and wisdom.  Other times I read it and ask, “Why in the world is THAT in there?”

Sometimes I read it and scream, “That’ll preach!”  Other times I read it and scream, “I don’t want to preach THAT!

Sometimes I read it and find, “When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh.  And after he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Seth lived 912 years, and then he died.”    Other times I read it and find Jesus saying, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Sometimes I read it and I’m preoccupied. Other times I read it and it captures every ounce of my attention.

Sometimes I read it out of guilt and obligation.  Other times I read it with joy and anticipation.

Sometimes I read it and things seem cloudy and confusing.  Other times I read it and my eyes and heart are opened.

Sometimes I read it and sermons come easy.  Other times I read it and sermons are produced through weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Sometimes I read it and I’m encouraged.  Other times I read it and I’m convicted.

Sometimes I read it and I’m confirmed.  Other times I read it and I’m challenged.

… I continue to read.

That was about 5 minutes of furious typing.  I paused merely to write sentences that made sense and had some form of grammar.

I love the Scriptures.  Each time I pick them up their depth is made evident.  Reading is not always easy but its always worth it.
