This Peterson song was released in 2010 and I return to it often. It communicates the truth about marriage in metaphor: Dancing in the minefields.
And we went dancing in the minefields
We went sailing in the storms
And it was harder than we dreamed
But I believe that’s what the promise is for
Marriage is a sacred relationship ordained by God and it communicates the gospel in profound and ordinary ways. The Bible describes marriage as two becoming “one flesh.” In this union, we experience a thousand deaths as we die to self daily. It’s dangerous. It requires humility and vulnerability. It opens the doors for heartache.
Yet, vulnerability gives way to beauty as God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.
Well “I do” are the two most famous last words
The beginning of the end
But to lose your life for another, I’ve heard
Is a good place to begin
I met Katie in a coffee shop outside of Baylor’s campus during our seminary days. It eventually led to a New Year’s Eve first date. I proposed in the summer and we were married on January 3, 2009. In the days since, we’ve been blessed by a dozen (or so) near misses as mines exploded around us. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
Give the song a listen …
