Embrace Adventure

(This brief reflection came to mind while on run this morning. On mile 4, I voiced this thought into my phone. I might develop the train of thought at a later date.)

In my seventeen years of pastoral ministry I’ve come to a startling conclusion: Most Christians are bored.

We have reduced Christianity to clean living and church attendance. I am a big fan of clean living and church attendance, but the gospel pushes us to more. Christ following is an adventure.

Now don’t take that thought too far. Adventure doesn’t necessarily mean a trip to a far-off land. The adventure will most likely take place in your living room, workplace, and community. Yet, it is a life of self denial, comfort zone destruction, and time spent with the Savior of the world. In our day of fascination with superheroes, I’m not describing one who wears a cape or fights crime. The Savior of the world used a cross and left behind an empty tomb.

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” That’s not boring. Not at all.

Put drudgery behind. Embrace adventure.
