I share this framework at every opportunity. It has been a sermon series, conversation over lunch, marital counseling sessions, and more. I recently shared it as an illustration in a Wednesday Night Bible study. Here it is in a truncated form:
Set your hearts and minds on things above (Colossians 3:1-4)
- As followers of Christ, we’ve been raised with Jesus to new life and eternal life
- The things of earth are all around us
- As followers of Christ, we need to set our hearts and minds on things above
Put to death the things of earth (Colossians 3:5-11)
- To set our hearts and minds on things above, we need to get rid of old habits
- We put things of earth to death. I repeat: death.
- Some things need to be completely removed from our lives
Put on the things of Christ (Colossians 3:12-14)
- Once we put things of earth to death, we need to replace those things with holy habits
- We need to place before our ears, eyes, and minds things that lead us to Christ
- We need to put these things into practice
Do all of this in Christian community (Colossians 3:15-17)
- We can’t do it alone
- We need people around us who will support and encourage us
- We need to be surrounded by people who will follow Christ with us
